On the Big Island, Hawaii's youngest and largest volcanic island, the standout features are the long, wide open slopes of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Far to the east, Puʻu ʻŌʻō is the center of current lava flows, as the land pushes further east into the Pacific Ocean. At the northern point of the Big Island, the steep peak of Kohala quickly descends into the Waipiʻo Valley.
