On the South Fork of Long Island, from the tip of Montauk, follow Route 27 back towards Amagansett and East Hampton to some of the nicest beaches on the East Coast, including Sagg Main at the mouth of Sagaponack Pond. Head north past Three Mile Harbor, through the village of Sag Harbor, then across the ferry to historic Shelter Island. A second ferry will take you to the North Fork, landing in Greenport, then out to Orient Point for a view of Plum Island.
