The massive, dynamic mountain ranges of northern Italy's Alps and Dolomites quickly give way to the expansive plains of the Po Valley, home to Turin, Milan, and Bologna. On the western edge of the valley, the Alps wrap around and connect to the Apennine Mountains. The Apennine range heads southeast through the center of Italy's peninsula. To the east is the Adriatic Sea, and to the west, the Tyrrhenian Sea. The islands off to the west are Corsica and Sardinia. The terminus of the south edge of Italy is a quick ferry ride away from the island of Sicily.
